چکیده

Pickup ions measured deep inside the heliosphere open a new way to determine the absolute atomic density of a number of elements and isotopes in the local interstellar cloud (LIC). We derive the atomic abundance of hydrogen and the two isotopes of helium from the velocity and spatial distributions of interstellar pickup protons and ionized helium measured with the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on the Ulysses spacecraft between -2 and -5 AU. The atomic hydrogen density near the termination shock derived from interstellar pickup ion measurements is 0.115• cm-3, and the atomic H/He ratio from these observations is found to be 7.7 • 1.3 in the outer heliosphere. Comparing this value with the standard universal H/He ratio of-10 we conclude that filtration of hydrogen is small and that the ionization fraction of hydrogen in the LIC is low.

Interstellar and Inner Source Pickup Ions Observed with Swics on Ulysses

Many species of pickup ions, both of interstellar origin and from an inner, distributed source have been discovered using data from the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on Ulysses. Velocity distribution functions of these ions were measured for the first time over heliocentric distances between 1.35 and 5.4 AU, both at high and low latitudes, and in the disturbed slow solar wind ...

Heliospheric and Interstellar Phenomena Deduced from Pickup Ion Observations

Pickup ions, created by ionization of slow moving atoms and molecules well inside the heliosphere, provide us with a new tool to probe remote regions in and beyond the heliosphere and to study injection and acceleration processes in the solar wind. Comprehensive and continuous measurements of H, He, C, N, O, Ne and other pickup ions, especially with the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (...

Measurement of the Abundance of Helium-3 in the Sun and in the Local Interstellar Cloud with Swics on Ulysses

The abundance of He in the present day local interstellar cloud (LIC) and in the sun has important implications for the study of galactic evolution and for estimating the production of light nuclei in the early universe. Data from the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on Ulysses is used to measure the isotopic ratio of helium (He=He = Γ) both in the solar wind and the local inters...

The helium isotopic ratio in the solar wind and ion fractionation in the corona by inefficient Coulomb drag

Using data obtained between 1991 and 1996 with the SWICS instrument (Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer) aboard the Ulysses spacecraft, a long time average of the (4He/3He) isotopic ratio of 2450 ± 460 in coronal hole dominated solar wind is derived. To assess the influence of inefficient Coulomb friction in the inner corona and to infer the solar photospheric abundance ratio from the sola...

Density of neutral interstellar hydrogen at the termination shock from Ulysses pickup ion observations

Aims. By reevaluating a 13-month stretch of Ulysses SWICS H pickup ion measurements near 5 AU close to the ecliptic right after the previous solar minimum, this paper presents a determination of the neutral interstellar H density at the solar wind termination shock and implications for the density and ionization degree of hydrogen in the LIC. Methods. The density of neutral interstellar hydroge...
